The SR-71 Blackbird was a long-range, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works and operated by the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1998. Designed for speeds exceeding Mach 3 and altitudes above 85,000 feet, it was nearly invulnerable to enemy defenses, as it could outrun both surface-to-air missiles and interceptors. Nicknamed "Habu" by its crews, the name originated from Okinawa, Japan, where the SR-71 was deployed at Kadena Air Base. Local residents likened the aircraft's sleek, black appearance to the Habu pit viper, a venomous snake native to the region. A total of 32 SR-71s were built, including two trainer variants, and the aircraft served during the Cold War, conducting reconnaissance missions over hostile territories such as the Soviet Union, North Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. Despite its advanced design, 12 SR-71s were lost in accidents, but none were ever shot down in combat, a testament to its speed and altitude capabilities. The SR-71 was retired in 1998, as advancements in satellite technology and high operating costs made it less essential, though it remains one of the most iconic and groundbreaking aircraft in aviation history.
