The SCR-578 "Gibson Girl" Survival Radio was a critical lifeline for downed aircrews and shipwrecked sailors during World War II. Named for its curvy shape, which resembled the illustrations of "Gibson Girls" by Charles Dana Gibson, this hand-cranked, portable radio was designed for use in lifeboats and survival situations.

The SCR-578 operated on emergency frequencies (500 kHz and 8280 kHz) and transmitted a distinctive SOS signal to guide rescuers. It was easy to operate even under stressful conditions; users cranked the dynamo by hand to power the transmitter, and its design allowed it to be held between the knees for stability in rough seas.

Equipped with a collapsible antenna or a kite for greater range, the "Gibson Girl" could transmit up to 200 miles. It was used extensively by the U.S. military and Allied forces and became a standard in survival kits, saving countless lives during and after the war.
