This design is based on the P-47 Thunderbolt (UN-M, serial number 42-8487) nicknamed “Spirit of Atlantic City N.J.” flown by Colonel Walker Melville "Bud" Mahurin of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group. Mahurin was the first American pilot to become a double ace in the European theatre and was also the only pilot to shoot down enemy planes in the European theatre the Pacific theatre, and the Korean War. During World War II he was credited with 20.75 aerial victories, making him the sixth-highest American P-47 ace. He was also credited with shooting down 3.5 MiG-15s in Korea, bringing his total to 24.25 aerial victories. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross x 8, Purple Heart and 7 x Air Medals . Col Mahurin passed away May 11th, 2010 at the age of 91.
