Nicknamed the “Wooden Wonder,” the de Havilland Mosquito was one of the most versatile and remarkable aircraft of the Second World War. Constructed largely from plywood and balsa using innovative moulded monocoque techniques, it was light, strong, and incredibly fast — fast enough to evade enemy fighters without needing defensive guns. Initially designed as an unarmed high-speed bomber, the Mosquito would evolve into a fighter-bomber, night fighter, reconnaissance platform, pathfinder, intruder, and maritime strike aircraft. Crews admired it for its speed, reliability, and survivability, and its adaptability made it invaluable across every major theatre.

The Mosquito began service as an unarmed photo reconnaissance aircraft, and its speed and range made it ideal for long-range missions over occupied Europe. Its bomber version soon followed, delivering highly accurate low- and high-level attacks — including raids on Gestapo HQs in Oslo and Copenhagen, Amiens prison (Operation Jericho), and V-weapon sites.

Its roles expanded to include:
- Day and night bombing (with Bomber Command and 2nd Tactical Air Force)
- Pathfinding and target marking (RAF No. 8 Group)
- Night-fighting over the UK and Europe (No. 85, 96, and 418 Squadrons)
- Intruder missions (harassing Luftwaffe night airfields)
- Photo reconnaissance (Europe, Burma, and the Pacific)
- Anti-shipping strikes (Coastal Command, using rockets and torpedoes)

Mosquitos also served in the Mediterranean, Burma, and the Pacific, and flew with the RAF, RCAF, RAAF, RNZAF, SAAF, USAAF, and postwar air forces including Israel and Sweden.
