The Hawker Hunter was a British transonic jet fighter developed by Hawker Aircraft during the early Cold War and became one of the Royal Air Force’s most successful post-war combat aircraft. Designed by Sir Sydney Camm and powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engine, the Hunter first flew during 1951 and entered RAF service in 1954. Originally developed as a day fighter to replace aircraft such as the Gloster Meteor, the Hunter combined high speed, strong manoeuvrability, and heavy cannon armament with excellent handling characteristics. The aircraft became well known for its clean swept-wing design and strong overall performance during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Hunter served extensively with the RAF in fighter, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance, and training roles. It also became one of Britain’s most successful military exports, serving with 21 air forces around the world and seeing combat in conflicts across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Approximately 1,972 Hunters were built, including licence production by Avions Fairey in Belgium and Fokker in the Netherlands. Although replaced in frontline RAF fighter service by newer supersonic aircraft during the 1960s, the Hunter remained in RAF training and secondary roles for many years afterward and became widely respected for its reliability and handling qualities.
