The Handley Page Hampden was a British twin-engine medium bomber developed in the mid 1930s to meet Air Ministry Specification B.9/32. It first flew on Sun 21ˢᵗ Jun 1936 and entered RAF service in Sep 1938. The Hampden was one of the RAF’s three main bombers at the start of World War II, alongside the Vickers Wellington and Armstrong Whitworth Whitley.

Built by Handley Page, the Hampden had a narrow, deep fuselage with the crew spread across separate positions. This layout earned it the nickname Flying Suitcase. It used Bristol Pegasus XVIII radial engines and carried up to 4,000 pounds of bombs. About 1,430 were built across British and Canadian production lines.

Hampdens flew early RAF bombing raids on German naval and industrial targets. They took part in Berlin raids, minelaying, and anti shipping strikes. Their speed and handling helped early in the war although limited defensive guns and cramped crew stations increased losses as German defences improved. Bomber Command withdrew the type from frontline operations in 1942. Coastal Command and training units used remaining aircraft until 1943 to 1944.
