F9F Panther "S-116" of Neil Armstrong High Top Canvas Shoes
This design is based upon the F9F Panther “S-116” (BuNo 125122) flown by Ensign Neil Armstrong whilst serving with VF-51 aboard the USS Essex (CV-9) during the Korean War. During a mission on September 3rd, 1951, his aircraft was hit by ground fire while making a low strafing run. During the subsequent battle to maintain control he collied with a telegraph pole and several feet of his right wing was torn off. Some sources note that the damage was caused when he collided with a cable strung between two mountains to snag low flying aircraft. Nonetheless, Armstrong was able to nurse his damaged aircraft back to friendly territory however after losing too much height he safely ejected from the aircraft near Pohang airfield.
