F4U Corsair "Lucybelle" Low Top Canvas Shoes
This design is not for the purist as it is based on a famous publicity shot of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington taken several hundred miles from the combat area at Espiritu Santo, on November 26, 1943. A random corsair was painted up to represent a fictional personal aircraft of Boyington - even though pilots from VMF-214 (including the CO) did not have specific aircraft assigned to them. No evidence has been found to confirm if this aircraft was ever flown by Boyington. The famous 1943 photo was recreated again in the 1970's (with the name changed to "Lulubelle") and BuNo.18086 has been attributed to be Boyington’s personal aircraft ever since. All records from Boyington’s first tour with VMF-214 have been lost however his second tour was well documented including every aircraft he flew during that tour up until he was shot down. BuNo 18086 is not amongst them. If you're looking for designs based on aircraft flown by Boyington, we do have designs based on #915 (the aircraft he was shot down in and one he scored 3 killls with) and #883, an aircraft he also scored a victory in.
