The Douglas C-47 Skytrain, known in RAF service as the Dakota, was one of the most widely used and versatile transport aircraft of World War II. The RAF received over 1,900 Dakotas through Lend-Lease, beginning in 1942. These aircraft, designated Dakota Mk I to Mk IV (based on US model variants), quickly became the backbone of RAF tactical and strategic airlift capability.

Dakotas were employed across every theatre in which the RAF operated — from Europe and North Africa to India and Burma. In Europe, they played a critical role in D-Day (Operation Overlord), Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine crossings, towing gliders and dropping paratroopers from RAF squadrons such as No. 46, 48, and 271 Squadrons. In the Far East, Dakotas operated under RAF Transport Command and the South East Asia Command, often flying over "The Hump" to supply Allied forces in China.

The Dakota was praised for its reliability, rugged construction, and ability to operate from rough, short airstrips. After the war, many Dakotas remained in RAF service well into the 1950s and even 1960s, with some converted for VIP transport, training, and search and rescue.
