The Martin Baltimore was an American-built twin-engine light attack bomber operated extensively by the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth air forces during the Second World War. Developed by the Glenn L. Martin Company from the earlier Martin Maryland design, the Baltimore was originally ordered by France in 1940, but following the fall of France the aircraft was diverted to Britain for RAF service. The Martin Model 187 Baltimore prototype first flew on 14 Jun 1941, and the aircraft entered RAF operational service in 1942, primarily in North Africa and the Mediterranean theatre. Powered by two Wright R-2600 Cyclone radial engines, the Baltimore featured improved defensive armament, increased payload capacity, and better crew protection than the earlier Maryland.

The Baltimore became an important tactical bomber and reconnaissance aircraft for RAF and Commonwealth squadrons operating in North Africa, the Mediterranean, Italy, and the Balkans. The South African Air Force became one of the type’s largest operators, while the Royal Australian Air Force operated the aircraft primarily through No. 454 Squadron RAAF and No. 459 Squadron RAAF during the Mediterranean and Italian campaigns. The aircraft carried out bombing, reconnaissance, and anti-shipping strike missions against Axis forces and earned a strong reputation for combat effectiveness in harsh desert and maritime conditions. A total of 1,575 Baltimores were built, with almost the entire production run supplied to British Commonwealth and Allied operators.
