The B-17 Flying Fortress, known for its rugged build and formidable defensive armament, was vital to the U.S. strategic bombing campaign in WWII. Around 12,731 B-17s were produced by Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed-Vega between 1936 and 1945, designed for long-range missions that allowed it to strike deep into enemy territory. The B-17's role in daylight bombing campaigns over Europe led to heavy losses—over 4,700 were lost in combat, particularly in the early war years before the introduction of long-range fighter escorts like the P-51 Mustang. Although retired by the U.S. Army Air Forces after the war, the B-17 continued to serve in other air forces. The Brazilian Air Force flew the last operational missions, using the B-17 for search and rescue and anti-submarine patrols until 1968.
