The A-24 Banshee was the U.S. Army Air Forces’ version of the Douglas SBD Dauntless, adapted for ground-based operations during World War II. Introduced in 1941, it was designed as a dive bomber and close air support aircraft, carrying a bomb load of up to 1,000 pounds and armed with forward-firing .50-caliber machine guns and a rear .30-caliber defensive gun. Despite its robust design and proven success in naval operations as the SBD, the A-24 struggled in early Army campaigns due to inadequate armour and limited speed, which made it vulnerable to enemy fighters.

The A-24 saw action in the Pacific Theatre, notably in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Guadalcanal, but was largely phased out of frontline service by 1943 in favour of more modern aircraft. A total of 948 A-24s were built, including several variants. While it lacked the impact of its naval counterpart, the A-24 Banshee contributed to early U.S. Army efforts and remains a fascinating part of dive bomber history.
