RCAF 425 Squadron ("Alouette") was established on 25 June 1942 at RAF Dishforth, England, as the first French-Canadian bomber squadron in the RCAF. The squadron initially operated Vickers Wellington aircraft, conducting bombing and mine-laying missions over Europe. In mid-1943, they relocated to Tunisia, flying operations against targets in Sicily and Italy. Returning to England in late 1943, 425 Squadron transitioned to Handley Page Halifax bombers and continued strategic bombing campaigns. In 1945, they re-equipped with Avro Lancaster aircraft in preparation for "Tiger Force" operations in the Pacific; however, the war's end led to their disbandment on 5 September 1945 at RCAF Station Debert, Nova Scotia. The squadron was reformed on 1 October 1954 at RCAF Station St-Hubert, Quebec, as an all-weather fighter unit flying Avro CF-100 Canuck aircraft. They later transitioned to the CF-101 Voodoo in 1961 and, in 1985, to the CF-18 Hornet, which they continue to operate today from CFB Bagotville, Quebec.
