Formed in 1941, No. 409 Squadron RCAF was Canada's first night fighter squadron, initially flying the Bristol Beaufighter and later transitioning to the de Havilland Mosquito. It operated over the UK and Northwest Europe, engaging in night air defense and intruder missions. Post-war, the squadron flew the CF-100 Canuck, CF-101 Voodoo, and later became a tactical fighter squadron, operating the CF-18 Hornet. Today, 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron is based at 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta, providing NORAD air defense and fighter training.
