The 161 (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight was an Australian Army aviation unit formed in June 1965 as part of the No. 16 Army Light Aircraft Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley for deployment to Vietnam. The unit initially deployed with two Cessna 180s and two Bell H-13 Sioux helicopters to support the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, at Bien Hoa Air Base. It later moved to Vung Tau Air Base in May 1966 and was re-designated as an independent unit with increased responsibilities.  The flight continued to operate in Vietnam, supporting the 1st Australian Task Force at Vung Tau and Nui Dat until it was withdrawn in 1971 Their radio call-sign "Possums" was to become their nickname for the duration.
