The Wright Flyer, built by Orville and Wilbur Wright, was the world’s first successful powered, controlled, and sustained heavier-than-air flight. On 17 December 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Flyer made history when Orville piloted it for 12 seconds, covering 37 metres (120 feet). This revolutionary aircraft, constructed with wood, fabric, and a lightweight engine, demonstrated the principles of controlled flight using a three-axis control system for pitch, roll, and yaw. Over subsequent flights that day, the brothers extended their distance to 260 metres (852 feet). The Wright Flyer marked the beginning of the modern aviation era, proving that powered flight was possible and laying the foundation for the development of all future aircraft.
