The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (“Huey”) was adapted early in the Vietnam War into one of the first dedicated helicopter gunships. While originally designed as a utility and troop transport helicopter, the UH-1A and UH-1B models were quickly armed with M60 machine guns, M134 7.62mm miniguns, and 2.75-inch (70 mm) rocket pods to provide close air support and escort for troop insertions. These armed variants, often called “Huey Gunships” or “Hogs” (rocket-heavy) and “Cobras” (machine gun/minigun-heavy), operated alongside unarmed troop carriers (“Slicks”).

The UH-1B and UH-1C gunship configurations featured uprated engines, wider blades, and improved armament mounts. They were essential in countering enemy ambushes, supporting air assault tactics pioneered by the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), and delivering suppressive fire before and during troop landings. While effective, the Huey’s relatively slow speed and large profile made it vulnerable to ground fire; losses were significant in high-threat areas.

By the late 1960s, the UH-1 gunship role was largely taken over by the AH-1G Cobra, which offered a narrower profile and better survivability, but Huey gunships continued to serve in fire support, convoy escort, and night operations throughout the Vietnam War.

Over 16,000 UH-1s were built, with more than 7,000 deployed to Vietnam. The gunship versions formed the backbone of U.S. Army helicopter fire support until dedicated attack helicopters became available.
