The Tornado is a multirole, twin-engine strike aircraft developed jointly by the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy under the Panavia consortium. First flown in 1974 and entering service in 1979, the Tornado featured variable-sweep wings, terrain-following radar, and a high subsonic top speed at low altitude. A total of approximately 992 Tornados were built across three main variants: the IDS (Interdictor/Strike), ADV (Air Defence Variant), and ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance). The Tornado saw extensive combat service in Operation Desert Storm (1991), where it flew deep strike and anti-runway missions, as well as later operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. During the Gulf War, the RAF lost six Tornados, mostly to enemy air defences during low-level attacks. While the UK retired its fleet in 2019, Germany and Italy continue to operate upgraded Tornados, particularly in the SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defences) role.
