The TBF Avenger was the U.S. Navy’s most powerful torpedo bomber of World War II, famed for its durability, heavy payload, and combat versatility. First seeing combat at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, the Avenger quickly became the backbone of the Navy's torpedo bomber force and served across all major Pacific campaigns.

Powered by the Wright R-2600 Twin Cyclone radial engine, the Avenger could reach speeds of around 275 mph, with a combat range over 1,000 miles. It typically carried a Mark 13 torpedo or up to 2,000 lbs of bombs, and featured a three-man crew: pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier. Its defensive firepower included a powered dorsal turret with a .50 cal machine gun, a forward-firing nose gun, and a ventral gun beneath the fuselage.

Renowned for its rugged construction and ability to absorb damage, the Avenger served not only in anti-ship roles, but also in bombing, reconnaissance, and even anti-submarine warfare—particularly in the Atlantic and later Pacific campaigns. Production was taken over by General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft Division, with these versions designated TBM instead of TBF.

Over 9,800 Avengers were built, serving with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, Royal New Zealand Air Force, and others. One of the most famous Avenger pilots was George H.W. Bush, who was shot down in combat in 1944 and later became the 41st President of the United States.

The Avenger remained in service into the 1950s in various secondary roles and helped define carrier-based strike aviation in WWII. Its mix of survivability, firepower, and reliability made it one of the most effective naval bombers of the war.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.

Flex fit , embroidered lettering and good shipping time. That's all you need from a hat and I Love Hangar delivered!
