The T-38 Talon is a twin-engine, supersonic jet trainer that first flew on April 10, 1959, and entered U.S. Air Force service on March 17, 1961. It was the world's first supersonic trainer and remains in service over six decades later. Powered by two General Electric J85 engines, the T-38 can reach speeds over Mach 1.3 and has a service ceiling above 50,000 feet. Its sleek design and performance earned it the nickname “White Rocket.” Over 1,100 T-38s were built between 1961 and 1972. The aircraft has been used extensively by the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and formerly by countries like Germany, Portugal, and Turkey. The T-38 has also been used by NASA for astronaut training and as a chase plane. The U.S. Air Force plans to gradually replace the T-38 with the T-7A Red Hawk in the late 2020s. Despite its age, the T-38's agility and performance have kept it relevant in modern pilot training.
