The T-38 Talon is the world’s first supersonic jet trainer, and one of the longest-serving aircraft in U.S. Air Force history. Introduced in 1961, the T-38 revolutionised pilot training by giving student aviators firsthand experience with supersonic flight, high-G manoeuvres, and jet aircraft handling—far earlier in their careers than ever before. Sleek, nimble, and reliable, the Talon became the backbone of advanced jet training for generations of U.S. military pilots.

Powered by twin General Electric J85 engines, the T-38 can reach speeds over Mach 1.3 and climb at 33,600 feet per minute. Its clean lines, bubble canopy, and tandem seating layout make it both an iconic and practical training platform. More than 1,100 T-38s were built, and the aircraft has served not only the U.S. Air Force but also NASA, the U.S. Navy, and several foreign allies.

While not a combat aircraft, the T-38 has played a vital support role in aircrew preparation for nearly every American frontline jet—from the F-4 and F-15 to the F-22 and F-35. NASA continues to use it for astronaut training and chase-plane duties.

The T-38’s longevity is unmatched: despite being over six decades old, many airframes remain in frontline use thanks to structural upgrades and avionics modernisation programs. A planned replacement, the T-7A Red Hawk, is set to take over in the late 2020s—but until then, the T-38 continues to shape the sharpest pilots in the world. Fast, elegant, and enduring, the Talon remains a Cold War-era legend still flying high.
