The North American T-28 Trojan is a piston-engined military trainer that served the U.S. Navy for more than three decades. Developed from the U.S. Air Force’s T-28A, the naval T-28B introduced a more powerful engine and a three-bladed propeller, with the Navy accepting its first aircraft in October 1953. The Trojan became an important part of Navy and Marine Corps pilot training, helping students develop the flying skills needed before progressing to more specialised aircraft.

Featuring tandem seating, a raised instructor’s cockpit and retractable tricycle landing gear, the naval Trojan was powered by a Wright R-1820 radial engine producing approximately 1,425 horsepower. The T-28B served as a land-based trainer, while the T-28C added an arrestor hook and a shorter propeller to provide additional clearance during aircraft carrier landings. Entering operational service in November 1955, the T-28C gave student aviators practical experience in carrier approaches and arrested landings.

The Trojan served through a period when naval aviation was increasingly dominated by jet aircraft, providing a piston-powered foundation for generations of naval aviators. It was eventually replaced in the training syllabus by the turboprop-powered T-34C Turbo Mentor. The Navy’s final instructional T-28 flight took place on 13 February 1984 with Training Squadron 27, bringing its 31-year naval pilot-training career to a close.
