The Supermarine Seafire was a naval adaptation of the legendary Spitfire, designed for operations from aircraft carriers. Introduced in 1942, the Seafire retained the Spitfire’s agility and firepower but featured reinforced landing gear, an arrestor hook, and folding wings for carrier storage. Despite being initially seen as a temporary solution for the Fleet Air Arm, it proved highly capable in its role, excelling in air superiority and ground-attack missions. The Seafire was particularly effective during the Allied invasions of North Africa and Normandy, and it also saw action in the Pacific Theatre, notably during the Battle of Okinawa. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin and later the Griffon engines, the Seafire reached speeds of over 600 km/h (375 mph). While it struggled with the rigours of carrier operations compared to purpose-built naval aircraft, its speed and manoeuvrability made it a valued asset in securing air superiority at sea.
