The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a revolutionary reconnaissance aircraft designed to operate at extreme speeds and altitudes during the Cold War. Developed in secrecy by Lockheed's Skunk Works, the SR-71 could fly at over Mach 3.3 and reach altitudes exceeding 85,000 feet (26,000 metres), making it nearly invulnerable to enemy missiles and fighters. First flown in 1964, it became a critical intelligence-gathering tool, providing real-time reconnaissance over hostile territories. Its sleek, futuristic design and titanium construction allowed it to withstand the intense heat generated by supersonic flight. The SR-71 set numerous records, including the fastest air-breathing crewed aircraft, and could cross entire continents in under two hours. Nicknamed the “Habu” by its crews, the Blackbird retired in 1998 but remains one of the most iconic aircraft in history, embodying innovation and speed in aviation.
