Supermarine Spitfire MJ627, coded “9G-Q,” is an airworthy Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXc built at Castle Bromwich in late 1943 and first flown on Nov 27ᵗʰ, 1943. During the Second World War it served with No. 441 Squadron RCAF, the “Silver Fox Squadron,” operating from advanced landing grounds in Northwest Europe after D-Day.

MJ627 entered operational service in Sep 1944 and flew fighter escort, patrol, and offensive missions during the Allied advance across Europe. On Sep 27ᵗʰ, 1944, during Operation Market Garden, the aircraft was credited with destroying a Messerschmitt Bf 109 over the Netherlands. The aircraft wore invasion stripes during this period, markings it still carries today in its restored wartime scheme.

On Mar 9ᵗʰ, 1945, MJ627 suffered engine trouble and force-landed in the Orkneys before later being rebuilt. After the war it passed through Dutch ownership before serving with the Irish Air Corps as aircraft “158.” It was later converted into a two-seat Spitfire in civilian ownership.

Restored to flying condition in the early 1990s, MJ627 remains airworthy in the United Kingdom, flying in authentic 441 Squadron “9G-Q” markings as one of the relatively small number of genuine combat-veteran Spitfires still flying today.

Many thanks for my wonderful sneakers!  I shall wear them with pride to remember my 25th mission with Bill DeSanders.
