SPAD XIII of Lt. Frank Luke Low Top Canvas Shoes
This design is based upon the SPAD XIII flown by Lt Frank Luke Jr. (May 19, 1897 – September 29, 1918) . Luke was an American fighter ace credited with 18 aerial victories, ranking him second among United States Army Air Service pilots after Captain Eddie Rickenbacker during World War I. Luke was the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor and the first USAAS ace in a day. Between September 12 and 29, Luke was credited with shooting down 14 German balloons and four airplanes. He achieved these 18 victories during just 10 sorties in eight days, a feat unsurpassed by any pilot in World War I. Lt Frank Luke was severely wounded during a mission on September 29th, 1918 however managed to land in a field before succumbing to his injuries. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant.
Luke flew several different aircraft however this particular aircraft (SPAD XIII S15202) is most commonly identified as Luke’s.
