The "Rustic" Forward Air Controllers (FACs) of the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS) played a vital role during the Vietnam War, particularly in covert operations over Cambodia from 1970 to 1973. Operating primarily from OV-10 Broncos, they directed airstrikes, provided real-time battlefield intelligence, and supported allied ground forces, including Cambodian troops, in their fight against North Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge forces. The Rustics were unique for their use of French-speaking controllers to communicate directly with Cambodian ground forces, facilitating effective coordination in a challenging environment. Their missions were often flown at low altitudes under intense enemy fire, exemplifying the bravery and precision of FAC operations during the war.
