RAAF Roundel (1942 - 1946) Distressed Dad Hat
Introduced during 1942 for RAAF aircraft operating in the Pacific, this national marking featured a white centre surrounded by a relatively narrow dark blue ring. Red was removed from Australian aircraft roundels to reduce the risk of confusion with the Japanese Hinomaru during combat operations. Several blue-and-white roundel variations appeared on RAAF aircraft during the war, differing particularly in the proportions of the blue and white areas. These red-free markings remained in use until 1946, when the RAAF began returning to red, white and blue national markings.
