The Dassault Mirage III entered Royal Australian Air Force service in 1964 as the Mirage IIIO, a licence-built interceptor and strike fighter produced by the Government Aircraft Factories (GAF) in Melbourne. A total of 116 aircraft were built, including IIIO(F) interceptors and IIIO(A) ground-attack variants. The Mirage replaced the CAC Sabre and became the RAAF’s primary fighter through the 1960s and 1970s.

Powered by a SNECMA Atar 9C engine, the Mirage IIIO could exceed Mach 2 and was optimised for high-speed interception, though it also performed strike and close air support roles. It was armed with twin 30 mm DEFA cannons and could carry air-to-air missiles, bombs, and rockets. RAAF Mirages were deployed operationally in Malaysia during the Five Power Defence Arrangements but did not see combat.

The Mirage III served with several frontline squadrons including No. 3, 75, and 77 Squadrons, and played a central role in Australia’s air defence for nearly two decades. It was progressively replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet from 1985 and fully withdrawn from RAAF service in 1988.
