Captain William Williams Foard was a USAAF pilot who flew the P-51 Mustang named "Swamp Fox" (Serial 44-15660) with the 364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, from RAF Leiston during World War II. He named his plane "Swamp Fox" after Brigadier General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero. Being stationed in England, Will saw the humor in painting the name "Swamp Fox" on his P-51, the British military's nickname for Marion in 1775.  Despite the tragic loss of his older brother, Gilbert, a B-17 tail gunner killed in combat on April 1, 1945, Will continued his service with dedication. He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster for his achievements. After the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
