The North American P-51 Mustang was one of the most successful fighter aircraft of World War II. Originally designed for the RAF and first flown in October 1940, the early Allison-powered models performed poorly at high altitude. The aircraft’s transformation came with the integration of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which dramatically improved performance above 15,000 feet.

The definitive variant, the P-51D, featured a bubble canopy for improved visibility, six .50 calibre machine guns, and external drop tanks that gave it unmatched range — over 2,500 km — allowing it to escort Allied bombers deep into enemy territory. With a top speed of over 700 km/h (440 mph), excellent agility, and long legs, the Mustang played a critical role in securing Allied air superiority over Europe from 1944 onward.

More than 15,000 Mustangs were built, serving with the USAAF, RAF, and other Allied nations. The Mustang remained in service into the Korean War and was flown by several air forces well into the Cold War era. Today, it remains one of the most beloved and recognisable warbirds, widely flown at airshows and preserved in museums around the world.
