This design is based on the P-40 (Curtiss Hawk H81-A-2) “White #7” flown by Robert Tharp Smith whilst serving with the American Volunteer Group ‘Flying Tigers’ in Burma and China during World War II. By the end of his tour with the Flying Tigers, he had accounted for at least 8* confirmed kills (* 9 depending on source).

His military decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Order of the Cloud and Banner with Special Cravat (China), Star Wing Medal (China) Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross (UK).
