The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a distinctive twin-engine, twin-boom fighter developed for the United States Army Air Corps before the Second World War. The XP-38 prototype first flew on Jan 27ᵗʰ, 1939, and the type entered operational service in 1941. Powered by two Allison V-1710 engines, the P-38 combined high speed, long range and heavy concentrated armament, with four .50-calibre machine guns and a 20 mm cannon mounted in the nose.

The Lightning served as a fighter, long-range escort, fighter-bomber and photographic reconnaissance aircraft across the Pacific, Mediterranean and European theatres. Its range and twin-engine reliability made it particularly valuable over the vast distances of the Pacific, where it became closely associated with America’s two highest-scoring fighter aces of the war. Major Richard Bong achieved 40 aerial victories, while Major Thomas McGuire was credited with 38, with both men scoring their victories while flying P-38s.

One of the Lightning’s most famous missions took place on Apr 18ᵗʰ, 1943, during Operation Vengeance. P-38s flew a precisely timed, long-range interception from Guadalcanal and shot down the Japanese aircraft carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto near Bougainville. Yamamoto was commander-in-chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Combined Fleet and had planned the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A total of 10,037 P-38 Lightnings were built between 1941 and 1945, primarily at Lockheed’s Burbank, California, plant. Its long range, concentrated firepower and adaptability made it one of the most important American fighters of the Second World War and one of the defining aircraft of the Pacific air campaign.
