The MiG-15, NATO codename “Fagot”, was a Soviet jet fighter that first flew in 1947 and entered service in 1949. It was one of the world’s first successful swept-wing jet fighters, powered by a reverse-engineered version of the British Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet. The MiG-15 gained fame during the Korean War, where it challenged American air superiority, particularly against the F-86 Sabre. Armed with a 37mm cannon and twin 23mm guns, it was highly effective against bombers and fighters alike. Estimates suggest over 17,000 MiG-15s were built, including licensed versions in China (J-2) and other Warsaw Pact nations. During the Korean War, MiG-15 pilots claimed over 1,000 air-to-air kills, though U.S. sources estimate a lower number, and approximately 335 MiG-15s were confirmed lost in combat. Operated by over 40 countries, the MiG-15 remained in service in some air forces into the 1980s, becoming a Cold War icon.
