KC-46A Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The Boeing KC-46A Pegasus is the United States Air Force’s newest aerial refuelling aircraft, developed to begin replacing the ageing KC-135 Stratotanker fleet. Boeing was selected for the programme in 2011, the first KC-46-configured aircraft flew in 2015, and the first operational aircraft was delivered to McConnell Air Force Base in January 2019. Based on the Boeing 767-2C, the Pegasus combines aerial refuelling with cargo transport, passenger movement and aeromedical evacuation.
The KC-46A carries more than 212,000 pounds of fuel and can transfer it through a fly-by-wire refuelling boom or hose-and-drogue equipment. It can also carry up to 65,000 pounds of cargo or 58 passengers during normal operations. Defensive systems, secure communications and greater battlespace connectivity were designed to make it more suitable for operations in contested environments than earlier USAF tankers.
The Pegasus was approved for worldwide operational deployments in September 2022 and has since supported U.S. and allied missions overseas. Its introduction has nevertheless been affected by technical problems, particularly involving the Remote Vision System used by the boom operator and the stiffness of the refuelling boom.
The USAF plans to acquire 179 KC-46As under the original KC-X programme. Rather than immediately replacing every KC-135, the Pegasus will serve alongside the older tanker for many years as the Air Force gradually modernises its aerial refuelling fleet.
