Hurricane Mk I College Style Short-Sleeve Unisex Premium T-Shirt
The Hurricane Mk I was the original production version of the aircraft and formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command at the outbreak of World War II. Entering service in late 1937, it was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin II or III engine producing around 1,030 horsepower and armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns. The Mk I had a maximum speed of around 325 mph and featured a fabric-covered wing and rear fuselage in its early form, later replaced with all-metal wings. Although slower and less refined than the Spitfire, it was robust, easier to repair, and very stable as a gun platform, making it highly effective against bombers. During the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Hurricane Mk I accounted for around 60% of RAF air-to-air kills. Approximately 3,600 Mk I Hurricanes were built before production shifted to later variants.
