The British Aerospace Harrier II, operated by the Royal Air Force as the Harrier GR5, GR7, and GR9, was a second-generation vertical/short take-off and landing strike aircraft developed jointly by British Aerospace and McDonnell Douglas from the American AV-8B Harrier II programme. The British version incorporated different avionics, weapons, countermeasures, and other modifications for RAF requirements, together with a larger composite wing, greater payload, and improved range compared with the first-generation Harrier. The first British-built development GR5 flew on 30 Apr 1985, the type entered RAF service in 1987, and the first operational squadron was declared ready in 1989. The RAF ordered 96 single-seat Harrier IIs, many of which were progressively upgraded from GR5 to GR7 and later GR9 standard.

The Harrier II became one of the RAF's principal close air support and battlefield strike aircraft, operating from land bases and Royal Navy aircraft carriers under Joint Force Harrier. It saw operational service over Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where its short take-off capability and precision-guided weapons made it particularly effective in expeditionary operations. Following the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the Harrier fleet made its final operational flights on Wed 15ᵗʰ Dec, 2010, ending more than four decades of British Harrier service.
