The Bell H-13 Sioux was a light utility and observation helicopter developed from the civilian Bell 47, one of the first successful mass-produced helicopter families. Entering U.S. military service in the late 1940s, the H-13 became one of the most recognisable helicopters of the Korean War. Powered by a single piston engine and featuring the distinctive transparent bubble canopy on later variants, it was used for observation, reconnaissance, liaison, training, search and rescue, and casualty evacuation missions.

The H-13 became famous during the Korean War, where it helped pioneer modern helicopter medical evacuation procedures. Fitted with external litters mounted beside the fuselage, H-13s rapidly carried wounded soldiers from the battlefield to Mobile Army Surgical Hospital units, becoming strongly associated with the “MASH” evacuation role. The type also served in observation and artillery spotting roles in Korea before continuing in U.S. military service into the early Vietnam War period. The Bell 47/H-13 family was widely exported, and the British Army operated licence-built examples as the Westland Sioux.
