Fleet Air Arm Landing Control Officer Sketch Greeting Card

$3.99 USD
Size

During the Second World War, the Royal Navy’s Deck Landing Control Officer, commonly known as the “batsman”, guided aircraft during their final approach to an aircraft carrier. Standing near the aft edge of the flight deck, he used a pair of signalling paddles, or “bats”, to direct pilots to correct their speed, height and alignment. He could wave off an unsafe approach or, when the aircraft was correctly positioned, give the final “cut” signal to land. Usually an experienced pilot himself, the batsman played a critical role in safely recovering aircraft onto the short, moving deck of a carrier.

This artwork is based on an original historical photograph and has been digitally recreated in a charcoal sketch style using modern image-making tools.
