Fairey Battle Union Jack Structured Twill Cap
At the outbreak of World War II, the Battle formed the backbone of the RAF’s light bomber force in France as part of the Advanced Air Striking Force. However, its relatively low speed, lack of armour, and limited defensive armament made it highly vulnerable to modern German fighters and flak. This was tragically evident during the Battle of France in 1940, where heavy losses forced its withdrawal from frontline combat.
Despite its combat shortcomings, the Battle was heavily used as a trainer throughout the war, particularly for gunnery and navigation under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Over 2,200 aircraft were built, including many in Canada.
The type was retired from RAF service in 1949. Though largely overshadowed by later aircraft, the Fairey Battle holds a place in RAF history as a transitional type between biplanes and modern monoplanes.
