The F6F Hellcat was the U.S. Navy’s most successful carrier-based fighter of World War II and a key contributor to American air superiority in the Pacific. Designed as a more powerful successor to the F4F Wildcat, the Hellcat combined ruggedness, firepower, and ease of handling, making it ideally suited for the demands of carrier warfare. It entered service in 1943 and quickly proved its worth in battles such as the Marianas Turkey Shoot, Battle of Leyte Gulf, and countless island campaigns.

Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the Hellcat could reach speeds of over 370 mph and was armed with six .50-caliber machine guns, along with the ability to carry bombs and rockets. It was tough, forgiving to fly, and could absorb significant damage and still bring its pilot home—traits that endeared it to Navy aviators.

The F6F racked up an astonishing kill-to-loss ratio of over 19:1, credited with destroying more than 5,200 enemy aircraft—more than any other Allied fighter in the war. Over 12,200 were built, including the F6F-5 variant which featured improved visibility and the ability to carry drop tanks and radar pods for night operations.

Flown primarily by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and also by the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, the Hellcat was a war-winning workhorse and a symbol of American industrial might and naval aviation dominance.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
