The F4U Corsair was a carrier-based fighter developed by Vought for the United States Navy during the Second World War. Designed around the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the Corsair first flew on 29 May 1940 and first reached U.S. Navy squadron service in 1942 before entering combat with the United States Marine Corps in Feb 1943. Recognisable by its distinctive inverted gull wing, the F4U combined speed, range, firepower, and ruggedness, making it one of the most effective naval fighters of the war.

The Corsair became one of the most successful Allied fighters in the Pacific, serving extensively with both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy in air superiority, close air support, fighter-bomber, and ground-attack roles. Initially used mainly from land bases by Marine squadrons before wider U.S. Navy carrier use followed, it fought throughout the Pacific campaign and later saw extensive combat during the Korean War. About 12,500 Corsairs were built, and by V-J Day Corsair pilots had achieved an air-to-air kill ratio of about 11:1. Although closely associated with U.S. service, the Corsair was also operated by Allied nations including the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, Royal New Zealand Air Force, and French Naval Aviation, remaining in frontline military service into the 1960s.
