F-94 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The early F-94A and F-94B variants carried four nose-mounted .50-calibre machine guns. The substantially redesigned F-94C replaced the guns with 24 unguided 2.75-inch Mighty Mouse rockets arranged in a ring around the nose radar, with another 24 rockets carried in optional wing pods. This armament was intended to deliver a concentrated salvo against Soviet bomber formations during night or poor-weather interceptions.
The F-94 saw operational service during the Korean War, initially defending Japanese airspace before flying night bomber escort and air-defence missions from bases in Korea. It became the first jet-powered all-weather interceptor to see combat and was credited with several night victories. The type also served extensively with Air Defense Command and Air National Guard units, protecting North American airspace during the 1950s.
Approximately 855 F-94s were built across the A, B, and C variants. The Starfire was gradually replaced by more capable interceptors such as the F-89 Scorpion, F-86D Sabre, and later supersonic types, although Air National Guard units continued operating it into the late 1950s. Despite its relatively short service career, the F-94 marked an important step in the development of radar-equipped, all-weather interceptors and Cold War continental air defence.
