F-9 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The Cougar served with both the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps, replacing the Panther in numerous carrier-based and shore-based fighter squadrons during the 1950s. Although it arrived too late to see combat in Korea, it became one of the Navy’s principal fighters during the mid-1950s and served in fleet air defence, fighter-bomber, carrier qualification, and training roles. Major versions included the F9F-6 and the improved F9F-8, which featured a longer fuselage, redesigned wing, increased fuel capacity, and improved performance.
Two-seat F9F-8T trainers were redesignated TF-9J under the unified U.S. military designation system in 1962 and remained in service after the single-seat fighters had been withdrawn. Marine Corps TF-9Js later saw combat in Vietnam, conducting strike coordination and reconnaissance, tactical air-control, and forward air-control missions before being replaced in these roles by the TA-4F Skyhawk in 1967.
The Blue Angels operated the F9F-8 Cougar from 1955 until midway through the 1957 season, displaying its agility and handling qualities at airshows across North America. Approximately 1,988 Cougars were built across all variants. Although eventually replaced by supersonic aircraft such as the F8U Crusader and F-4 Phantom II, the Cougar played an important role in the U.S. Navy’s transition from straight-wing early jets to more capable swept-wing carrier fighters.
