F-89 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
Early variants were armed with cannon, while the major-production F-89D replaced these with 104 Mighty Mouse unguided rockets carried in large wingtip pods. The later F-89H combined rockets with Falcon guided missiles. The definitive F-89J, converted from F-89D airframes, carried Falcon missiles and the nuclear-armed Genie air-to-air rocket, becoming the Air Defense Command's first interceptor equipped with nuclear armament. On Jul 19ᵗʰ, 1957, an F-89J conducted the first and only live test launch of a nuclear-armed Genie rocket during Operation Plumbbob over Nevada.
Although the Scorpion never saw combat, it played an important role in continental air defence during the 1950s and early 1960s, serving with Air Defense Command and later Air National Guard units within the North American air defence network. A total of 1,050 F-89s were built before the type was replaced in frontline service by faster and more capable interceptors such as the F-101B Voodoo and F-106 Delta Dart. The final F-89s remained in Air National Guard service until 1969.
