The Vought F-8 Crusader was a legendary U.S. Navy fighter, known as "The Last of the Gunfighters" because it was the last American jet designed with guns as its primary weapon. First flown in 1955, the F-8 was a supersonic, carrier-based aircraft with a unique variable-incidence wing that improved carrier landings. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engine, it could reach speeds of over Mach 1.7, making it one of the fastest naval fighters of its time.

The F-8 saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War, excelling in air-to-air engagements, with a kill ratio of 19:3 against North Vietnamese MiGs, thanks to its guns, Sidewinder missiles, and skilled pilots. Despite being replaced by more advanced jets like the F-4 Phantom II, the Crusader was loved for its agility and performance. A total of 1,261 F-8s were built, and it remained in service with some foreign air forces, like France, into the 1990s. Its reputation as a tough, reliable fighter cemented its place in aviation history.
