F-117 Nighthawk Stars and Stripes Low Profile Dad Hat
With its angular, faceted surfaces and radar-absorbing coating, the F-117 could evade detection while delivering laser-guided bombs with surgical precision. It proved its combat effectiveness in Operation Just Cause in Panama (1989) but truly earned its reputation during Operation Desert Storm (1991), flying over 1,200 sorties with near-perfect strike accuracy and zero losses, despite targeting some of Iraq’s most heavily defended sites.
The aircraft returned to combat in Operation Allied Force over Kosovo in 1999, where it suffered its only known combat loss—an F-117 was shot down by a Serbian SAM, though the pilot was rescued. The Nighthawk flew its final combat missions during the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 before being retired in 2008, as newer platforms like the F-22 and F-35 emerged.
Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
