F-111 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The F-111 introduced several major features, including swing wings, terrain-following radar, side-by-side crew seating, an internal weapons bay and a crew escape module. It could fly at very low level, at high speed, and strike targets in poor weather or at night. Although built around Cold War nuclear strike requirements, it became best known for conventional precision attack.
The F-111 saw combat in Vietnam, Operation El Dorado Canyon over Libya in 1986, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In Vietnam, early Combat Lancer testing in 1968 ended after three F-111As were lost to accidents or malfunctions. After fixes, the aircraft returned in 1972 for Linebacker operations and flew more than 4,000 combat sorties, losing six aircraft in combat.
Major variants included the F-111A, F-111C, F-111D, F-111E, F-111F, FB-111A strategic bomber and EF-111A Raven electronic warfare aircraft. A total of 566 F-111s of all series were built. The name “Aardvark” was used unofficially for years but became official when the USAF retired the F-111F in 1996. The EF-111A remained in service until June 1998, and the RAAF retired its F-111 fleet on Dec 3ʳᵈ, 2010.
Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
