The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, or "Thud," was a supersonic fighter-bomber used extensively during the Vietnam War. Known for its ability to carry heavy bomb loads at high speeds, it was originally designed for nuclear strikes but became a key player in conventional bombing missions. Its nickname, "Thud," came from a mix of its hefty appearance and a playful reference to The Howdy Doody Show's “Chief Thunderthud”.

A pivotal role the F-105 played was in the Wild Weasel missions, where specially modified two-seat F-105Gs were used for Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD). These planes would locate and destroy enemy radar and surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites, making them essential for protecting strike aircraft. Wild Weasel crews were notorious for their bravery, often flying into dangerous, heavily defended areas to take out enemy threats.
