English Electric was a leading British aircraft manufacturer, producing around 10,000 aircraft, including some of the UK’s most iconic designs. Its most famous creations were the English Electric Lightning, a supersonic Cold War interceptor known for its incredible speed and climb rate, and the English Electric Canberra, a versatile jet bomber used globally for decades, even licensed in the U.S. as the Martin B-57. During WWII, the company also produced Handley Page Hampden bombers under license. English Electric’s innovative designs left a lasting legacy, particularly with the Lightning and Canberra, before it merged into British Aircraft Corporation in 1960.
